Dona Nenem is a large 800 hectare estate located near Presidente Olegário, a city in Minas Gerais 430 kilometers from the capital, Belo Horizonte. It is owned by Eduado Campos, who named the farm 'Dona Neném,' after his mother. Eduardo inherited the land in the 1970s. At the time Minas Gerais was not known for it's coffee production and the property was not yet producing coffee so Eduardo set to work converting it.
Today 230 hectares of the estate are dedicated to producing coffee. From harvest to harvest Eduardo takes great care to look after the health of the coffee trees. Each year 10% of crops are renewed by trees grown on-site in specially made green houses. On average the coffee trees are replaced every 10-12 years ensuring a higher yield and higher quality berries.
The rest of the 800 hectare estate is divided between subsistence agriculture and cattle. The family live off much of the produce grown on the farm, including the cattle which are known locally as zebu and and are acclaimed as some of the best in the world! The Campos family also leave plots of the land on the estate untouched and actively replant native plants to counter the impact of cattle and the coffee on the environment and return some of the property to its original, natural state.
Eduardo Campos' coffee has been recognized for its excellence in many competitions both locally and internationally including: placing as a finalist in the Minas Gerais Coffee Quality Contest in 2010, 2011, and 2012 as well as the BSCA competition for 3 years straight and most recently in the Cup of Excellence Competition in 2013, where it placed 20th with a score of 86.47.
This 22 carton lot is made up of 100% Yellow Bourbon cherries that were picked selectively using machinery which measures the weight and density of each cherry. To ensure only the ripest beans are selected during the harvest, Eduardo does at least three passes of picking throughout the season. This particular lot was pulped after harvest and carefully dried. The resulting cup has a lovely floral and honey aroma, orange citrus acitidy and sugarcane sweetness, with creamy body, and notes of vanilla, chocolate and peach.
'It is a pleasure to work with coffee. First, because it is a family tradition. Only on my part, I have been in coffee for more than 40 years. My father, 70, and my grandfather who produced for a long time...We can say that coffee has been part of the family for 100 years. That's more than a century of tradition in coffee farming, and always innovating,' - Eduardo Pinheiro Campos.
